Operation 4: Brothers In Arms What’s Up – July 14, 2020
It’s finally here Gears fans! Operation 4: Brothers In Arms delivers some of the biggest changes we’ve seen in Gears 5.
Starting today, we’re rolling out some major updates. We’ve added an all-new Ranked System where victories matter and why your rank goes up or down is clear. The store has been overhauled to feature new and previous items and we’ve added Gears Coins, our new earnable currency, to unlock almost every item you want.
Operation 4 also marks the return of beloved characters Dom, Paduk, and the sinister Karn (and three more!) as part of the biggest character drop in Gears 5. Maps? Yeah, we’ve got more of those, too.
Buckle up and get ready to kick some ass. It’s show time!
Operation 4 brings an all-new Ranked System to Gears 5.
We’ve simplified Ranked to be clear and a reflection of your personal skill journey as you level up from Bronze to Masters.
Your rank is now determined by Gears Points (GP); the more you have the higher your Rank. Players earn GP for winning and based on your personal performance. Every match costs GP to compete, so – the higher your tier the more it costs to enter.
All Ranked players will get rewards for playing. The higher you reach the better stuff you get!
Since this is such a massive departure from our previous Ranked System, we’re starting Operation 4 with a Ranked Preseason.

Unlocking content in Gears 5 just got a whole lot easier. Presenting Gears Coins, our new earnable currency, which can be used to unlock nearly every item in the store or even upgrade PvE skill cards.
Gears Coins are earned just by playing. The easiest way to earn them is by progressing through the Tour of Duty. Gears Coins are also available as Ranked and Escape rewards.
Operation 4 also brings a brand-new store which makes it easier to get new and previously released content.
Read our recent blog to get all the details!
Operation 4 brings six new characters – the most we’ve dropped at a single time in Gears 5.
New to Operation 4, we’ve changed how you unlock characters. Beginning today, anytime you get a character skin they are immediately playable. For example, you can choose how to unlock Dom – do you earn him by playing through the Tour or do you by pick up his ‘base’ version in the Store?
- Dominic Santiago
- Garron Paduk
- UIR Soldier
- Zamil Karn
- Locust Grenadier
As we’ve recently announced, we’ve eliminated (mostly – see below) the requirement for characters to launch with unique Ultimate and Arcade abilities. This enabled us to ramp up the production and get more characters in your hands sooner.
We know this has impacted our PVE players as they are able to play as characters without any Hero abilities. The good news is in Operation 5, you will finally be able to play with whatever character and class combination you want.
In Operation 4, Paduk is the only character to be playable in PvE with a new Ultimate ability. All new Heroes are playable in Arcade; however, they use existing abilities/loadouts.
Garron Paduk excels at crowd control, using his Fear ability to push enemies back and create space for his team.
Ultimate: Put nearby enemies into a state of Fear. Enemies under Fear cannot attack and will retreat. Does not affect bosses.
Passive: Deal double damage to enemies under Fear
Perks: Max HP, Ammo Capacity, Ultimate Cooldown, Critical Damage
(Descriptions for Level 6 used)

Acceleration (Rare) – Deal 30% extra damage to targets over 15 meters away.

Intimidation (Legendary) – Killing an enemy with a critical hit applies 12 seconds of Fear to enemies within 5 meters.
Lifeline (Epic) – Anyone who kills an enemy in the Fear state heals and gains 50% Stim.
Menace (Rare) – Executing an enemy gives 50 seconds of Ultimate recharge.
Markza Mastery (Epic) – 70% extra damage and 35% active effects with the Markza.

For fans that want to pick up all these characters in one shot, we’ve got you covered!
The Operation 4 Bundle includes all six new characters, the complete Bound by Blood weapon skin set, 1000 Iron and 30 days of Boost for $19.99.
Of course, all characters can be picked up individually using Gears Coins or Iron via the in-game store.
In Operation 4, we’re rolling out three new maps including the all new Reactor and classic favorites Blood Drive and Checkout.
We know you want more maps. As a reminder, the team has doubled down on map production so expect a lot more maps in Operation 5.
This Pendulum Wars era facility is a return to a bygone era. The map features a massive reactor that periodically charges causing steam to be released obscuring the advantageous sightlines of its raised central platform. Movement is key on this map as you set yourself up for intense close quarter action.
This is not the place you want to shop for groceries. This iconic map features tight lanes and the promise of intense Gnasher fights. If playing support is more your style, there is space in the middle of the map to set provide covering fire – just watch out for those flanks. Sound the alarm!
The divisive but phenomenally popular Blood Drive caters to all types of players. Want to snipe – head up the stairs. Looking for some grizzly Gnasher action – head down the hallway.
In Operation 4, we’ve revamped the Tour of Duty to provide even more value for playing Gears 5.
It’s still chocked full of ways to show off on the Battlefield. We expect to see lots squads of the UIR Cosmonaut and Kilo Squad Paduk slaying out. And you won’t want to miss out on the three weapon skins, expressions, executions and more. And careful with the Maria mark, you don’t want to blind your teammates with their own tears.
But we haven’t stopped there, we’ve added the new Legends rank. Sitting above General, this Rank can be re-earned indefinitely and enables you to keep earning Gears Coins for as long as you play.
Operation 4 brings some major updates to both Horde and Escape. We’ve added Level 6 Skill Cards, optimized our playlists for better matchmaking, put Horde Frenzy into custom lobbies, added new Hivebusters and done a major balance update.
Get all the details here!
We’re not stopping today! Throughout Operation 4, we’ve got lots more planned. There will be PvP and Horde events, weekly updates to the store and two new characters coming mid-Operation!
The recently added Developer’s Playlist will also be very active as we continue to test out balance tweaks and mode updates.
Operation 4 includes 24 new achievements for you to chase worth 340 Gamerscore. Get grinding!
